How to care for your sterling silver jewelry

All silver will tarnish over time. But there are things you can do to slow the process and to remove the tarnish when it does happen.

Things that make tarnish happen faster: lotions, sunscreens, makeup, perfumes, hair products, and even your skin can have substances that cause oxidation. If you do apply products, let them dry before putting on your jewelry.

Too much moisture also isn't good for silver jewelry. Don't store it in the bathroom and take it off before you shower, work out or use cleaning products. If it does get wet, dry it thoroughly with a soft towel.

When you take off your jewelry for the day wipe it with a soft cloth and store it in a jewelry box. If you won't be wearing the piece for a while you could store it in an airtight plastic bag to help prevent tarnish.

When tarnish does happen, it can be removed with a special silver polishing cloth.  Liquid chemical tarnish removers are not recommended. Some of my pieces are intentionally patinated (tarnished) to bring out the details in certain areas. These chemicals will destroy that effect.

Lastly, be gentle. Silver is soft and scratches easily. Even rough fabrics can cause damage. If you care for your jewelry properly it will look beautiful and bring you joy for years to come.
